I Happy, You Happy

Dinner went well last night. Everyone was happy (I guess), food was sufficient, although I thought some of my China colleagues found the taste of Rojak weird, which left Bubbles and me and another colleague eating away, wondering what was wrong with Rojak.

After a whole day of walking and listening to boring speeches, I thought that everyone was tired, and would head back for the hotel after dinner. I even saw some girls rubbing their tired eyes, with a ready-to-sleep look. BUT, boss came out with ‘bad news’ that durian was next, followed by Mustafa-the-24hr-shopping-mall. I looked at her, amazed. I mean, I don’t know about boss (yes, my full-of-don’t-know-come-from-where-energy boss), but I knew that they were tired. Plus some of them don’t really like durians (one of the topics I ‘found’ during dinner, since I don’t know them at all), and were not keen for it. Oh well, boss is the boss. If boss says go, we all go. Lucky me, I did not have to follow.

Today is another long day for them, with another dinner tonight. Again, I am the ‘coordinator’ for the dinner, BUT I am not joining them tonight kekeke. After making sure everything is ok, I will leave for my appointment. Going waxing tonight with Elfie’s Godma-I!

I got the Elle magazine 1-for-1 promotion for Hollywood waxing. I jio Bubbles, but she backed out at the last minute, said scared pain… -_-.. so I jio Godma-I instead lor. But Godma-I is almost 5 months pregnant now, so we are both worried that she might not be able to do it, though the therapist told me before that she has done for pregnant woman before, so should be ok right? I also called to ask, and they said should be no problem. So Godma-I, no worries la!

Ex-D called me a few times the day before. I did not pick up the calls. Not that I am being heartless, but I am scared of hearing things like ‘Can we be together again?/How come you never call me?/I am so useless./I wish I can die and leave the insurance money to my family.’ and so forth and so forth. I heard it not once, not twice, but countless times from this man. And to this day, he is still alive. Of course, I am not cursing him to die or disappointed that he did not kill himself, but I am just sick of hearing the same thing all over again for the Nth time. If he has the energy to do all these, why not spend the time looking for a job, or doing something else more meaningful? Yes, I may not have the same feeling for him anymore, but I still wish him well, and I hope that he can pick himself up, soon.

I received an sms from a friend (I shall not reveal who) last night at 3.30am. I think he was feeling quite down, and needed to let out some steam. He mentioned something like ‘its time to start living his own life, instead of for others’.

Sometimes, it is hard to make a decision – to make yourself happy first, or to make others happy first?

I used to think that it is important, and I should always make others happy first, before I can get happy myself. But over the years, I have learnt to be more selfish. I feel that I must be happy first, before others can feel happy too. Maybe its because I am born with a bitterguord face, plus I am not one who will, or can hide me feelings, so if I am not happy, it just shows on my bitterguord face, and that, in turn, makes those around me unhappy as well. So, I conclude that I must first be happy myself, only then can I make others around me happy.

Which, I think, it has made me a happier person. Ask my friends, and I am sure they will tell you that I am a happier person than before. Yes, I may now have that care-less attitude, I may be selfish now, but if it makes everyone happy, why not?

For my that friend who smsed me last night, I hope you can find what you want in life, and do it. I wish you happiness!

My Lunch

Nasi lemak for lunch

Barley drink from Ya Kun
How not to get fat when you have colleagues who loves to feed you yummilicious BUT sinful stuff????

Boss Stays, I Stay

I have a big group of colleagues from China here for a study trip this week. Its like, quite a major event for us. From nominating the participants, to confirming the namelist, to getting travel visa (and passports for some) from the embassy, to confirming the list, to finding a hotel (for some reasons, hotels are always fully booked when I need them most), to thinking of places to bring them, to grouping them together, to finding the appropriate room partner for everyone, Bubbles and I have been busy with this for the past 2 – 3 weeks.

Today finally arrived, and boss has to be late… Well, luckily she is not really involved in this morning’s first program, so they started first.

I have been talking to my China colleagues for the longest time, and I have no idea how they look like, whether they are fat or thin, tall or slim. Now, at least I see some of them, I can finally put faces to the voices I have been talking to, and them vice versa.

One of my colleagues who travels to China quite frequently, told me that plump people, especially girls, are very rare in China (not even fat ok, just plump!). When another colleague, who is rather on the plump side went over, she was treated like a rare species, and everyone stared at her like they have never seen such a ‘creature’ before.

That puzzled me, because I have always thought that in China, the food is always rather oily, and rice is always given very generously. How come they can maintain being that slim and fat-free after all these years of high carbo diet? Then I knew – they walk a lot. Must be right? Not like Singaporeans, who will want to take a bus, or even a cab, even if the destination is only 2 bus-stops away, I think most people in other parts of the world walk more than us. Is this the main culprit of obesity on the rise in our country? Maybe…

Tonight, we will bring them out for dinner at a well-known hawker center for dinner. Well, there are over 40 persons, can’t expect us to bring them to restaurants every night, right? Come Singapore, of course must try Singapore hawker food mah, right? Cannot be come Singapore, bring them to Chinese restaurant right? And that easily cost us around $700 already…

We pre-ordered the food last night, so that we can just sit down and eat later, and not have to wait too long for the food. And the earlier we finish, the earlier we can leave, the earlier we can go home. Good idea right? That is, IF boss goes home too. Is boss stays, I stay. Yes, Jack and Rose are our middle names. Boss stays, I stay. Boss jumps, I jump…

Dear all, help me cross all your fingers and toes, ok?

IT Show or PC Show?

I really need a new laptop at home. Neighbourhood-doglover-friend D asked me to wait till the IT Show to get one. Good idea hor?

Er… IT Show and PC Show, are they the same har?

D also recommended that for users like me, Acer is cheap and good. Cheap, I like. But Acer I heard there are quite a lot of problems. D told me it depends on the user. So, does it mean if I am nice to it, treat it well, don’t overwork it, let it rest for at least 8 hours a day, sayang it once in a while, give it a massage every other day, it will be good to me too?

IT Show
Date: 8 – 11 Mar 2007
Venue: Suntec Convention Hall 601 – 603, Level 6

Just Me

Like any other Chinese New Year, this year's CNY is the time for gathering. For people who usually don't have the time to meet, there seems to be little excuse to skip this important meeting. This is the time when we all take the opportunity to catch up with one another's lives.

We went to Mdm Foo's new house along in the east area. She had moved there since last June, but we had not had the chance to come visiting (is this another excuse?). Her new home is nice -cosy, comfortable and convenient. Much better than the ulu even-birds-don't-lay eggs place she used to stay in. So nice that I forgot to take pictures. And she got it really cheap (Ok, its not really cheap. Just that she got it at a good price). We all urged Gangster to buy the empty unit on the level above Mdm Foo's kekeke.

Mdm Foo and I used to be really close, when we were much younger. Every week, we will spend at least one night partying together, at Hard Rock Cafe, Sparks (erm... there is no more Sparks now), or somewhere else that is hip during that time. Even if it was only the 2 of us, we still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly, dancing to the music, catching glimpses of the people around us.

Somewhere along the way, we drifted apart. Maybe it was because I closed myself to everyone at one time. Maybe it was because she studied at the U, while I did my diploma. Maybe she was busy paktoring, while I was struggling with my degree. Anyway, we sort of lost that closeness.

But, I am glad to say that although we are not as close as before, we still do try to keep up with each other's lives. Now and then, I will sms her, ask her out for lunch (our work places are very nearby each other), or at gathering such as the last one we had. We still do confide in each other things that we may not have volunteered to tell other people.

Like Mr. A mentioned, people change, the world changes, and all we can do is - to grow together, with the people and the world. As much as we would like certain things to remain the same forever, the sad truth is that nothing can be forever.

How many people we come across in our lives, can remain in our lives forever? I can only say that most in my life, are only passing clouds. But despite the fact that they are only passing clouds, they, together with the people that I cherish, and chose to stay close with, make my life whole. Without any one of them, I may not be who I am today, or what I am like now. There may be people that I hate (hate is a strong word, yes. But I admit, there are people that I do hate), there may be people whom I love, or have loved before. But every single one of them, make up the person I am now.

The world is so big. I am only me, the insignificant me. But still, I think I make up part of some other people's lives as well.

Right?

Kara-forever-oke

KTV anyone? Bubbles suddenly said that she has not been singing for a long time, and asked if I wanted to extend the booking we had for a company fuction next week, so we can both sing to our heart’s content after that. Haha… Yes, we both love to sing. In fact, most of the Beach gals love singing, yeah?

I remember the time when HP made me sing Jay Chou’s 珊瑚海 for the Nth time, and no matter how many times we tried, the end result was the same – H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E. ! This is one damn challenging song man! Try it, you know what I mean.

When I was in Taipei, LA also chose this song, and I accepted the challenge once again. And of course, the result was the same. When the chorus part came, we both burst out laughing after I sang one note. Really horrible lor. I would say, I am not that bad a singer, but when it comes to this song, I admit defeat. I can’t do it.

Even after practicing it many many times at home and in the office, I still can’t do it nicely in KTV. Maybe, it’s the wrong key (yeah, blame it on the key)?

KTV anytime soon, gals?

Happy Gal

I got my letter today. I am a very happy gal!

*BIG BIG GRIN*

加油!

YAWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNNNNNN…

I feel so lazy… Yes, I AM lazy…

Can I don’t work??

Maybe I don’t like what I am doing… That’s why I always don’t feel like working, no mood to work etc etc etc…

I have a Lo Hei lunch today with my boss and team. After that boss is coming back for meeting with her boss. Hope she won’t stay after that… *cross fingers*

Actually, I should count myself lucky already, that boss does not always come back. The time I see boss is only like, once a month for 2weeks max? Sometimes once every 2 months? So, yes I am lucky de… So hopefully before boss gets posted back here, I can find another role… *cross fingers and toes*

It is predicted that those born under my zodiac sign will have a lot of 小人 in the year of the Pig, and we are advised to get a metallic pagoda to chase away those 小人… *makes a mental note to get a metallic pagoda*

But then, I have to say that I have always been quite lucky, in some ways. Despite the many 小人I have encountered, I have quite a few 贵人 as well. Although I have not been doing very well in my career, that, I feel, has only got myself to blame. For not being ambitious enough. For focusing on the wrong things in life. For not being zealous/enthusiastic/passionate enough in what I do. For not knowing what I want to do. And still, I managed to do somewhat good enough for all the things I did or did not do. Because I have some good friends, some 贵人, who are always there to help me.

I know who you are, you know who you are. Thanks! *Hugs & muaks!*

Now, what I need to do is to get a new notebook, decide on what I want, set a goal, and go achieve it.

Go, Rose, go!

ThinkPad X60?

My home laptop dieded on me. Its time anyway. It has served me faithfully for many many years already. So I think I should let it go peacefully, instead of trying to revive it.

Anyone got lobang for cheap and good notebook?

Thank You Buddha

Today is the first day I come back to work, and I totally no mood to work! Yes yes, I know… I never have the mood to work, anyway…

Maybe, I should find work that is own time, own target. Wanna work, work. No mood to work, then declare off day. How shiok can that be? Wait till I strike that S$10Million New Year Toto, I shall fulfill my dream. Or, let me strike that S$2Million Big Sweep, I am also happy enough.

Today my company got Lang Sai. Reminds me of the time in my ex-ex-company, where they will throw our company products sample and everyone will grab. So fun! Oh ya, the Lang Sai also gave a 4D number leh. Must go buy…

Alternative is: find a rich man who is willing to marry me and support me for the rest of my life, and give me unlimited money to spend. NOW, isn’t that shioker than shiok? But then… where got such good things one?

School always teach – you have to work hard for your future; you have to earn what you want. Even the song also sings: she works hard for her money. You don’t work hard, you don’t get money, and you don’t get what you want so easily.

But then, how about those born with silver spoon in their mouths? Must be their ancestors work damn hard so it benefit their descendents’ descendents’ descendents.

Since I don’t work very hard, and I assume that maybe my ancestors did not work hard enough to benefit me, I shall conclude that my returns are not that high, as compared to some of my friends. I should thank Buddha that I have what I already have, based on the fact that I have not worked so hard, and yet can still get what I have.

Thank you Buddha. I will work harder so that next year, I shall get more, if not equivalent to what some of my friends got this year.

BBQ at Godma-I house

Yesterday, I brought Elfie for his doggie gathering at Godma-I’s house – BBQ!

I was supposed to bring Marshmallow, Sweet Potatoes, and Sweet Corn, but I decided not to buy the Marshmallows, because I am the only one who LOVES them. But then, turned out Godma-I bought a small pack (just for me *grin*).

Oh, I found out that the Cold Storage at Holland V opens throughout CNY. So for those who needs something urgently, you can go there for your last minute grocery shopping in future.

We started quite early… about 6.30, the fire was already going very strong, thanks to Godma-I’s father-in-law. The pit was next to the pool, so there were lots of kids playing and swimming around there. Some of them were attracted by the dogs – Elfie, Sox, Cotton, Winky, Whisper, Butter, Chopsticks (5 malteses, 1 Shih Tzu, and 1 Pomeranian).

Elfie made a joke of himself. He has always not been a fan of swimming. Whenever we bring him to Sentosa, he entertained himself by running about in the sand, but never will he go near the water. But this time, he kaypoh kaypoh at the pool. He was amused by a man swimming freestyle, and was trying to follow him by walking along the edges of the pool. He walked along the edges carefully. Then he reached the edge of 2 pools, which were very near to each other, and when he tried to do a U-turn, he dropped into one of the pools! Ahahaha! He was swimming for his dear life, whilst still on leash! I was laughing very hard, and at the same time, trying to pull him up from the pool with the leash I was still holding on to.

A wet Elfie

The husband and wife - Sox and Cotton
A lady-like Whisper

A sweet sweet Winky

A very cute Butter

Delicious beef roll prepared by Godma-I and hubby!

Its Whisper's and Winky's birthday celebration too!

******

I think... I ate too much... In Taipei, and during CNY... I feel so bloated, and so indigested...

Everytime I eat a piece of Bak Gwa or pineapple tart, and Elfie will look at me hopefully. Everytime I will tell him ‘No, this is not for you.’ a few times, before he gives up hope and lie down looking at me with those eat-la-eat-la-eat-till-you-get-fat-fat look.

And now, I can feel the after-effect of eating so much. My pants and shorts that were loose when I bought them, are now T.I.G.H.T. Help me! I need to diet!

19 Feb 2007 - Chu Er

This is the day the Beach Gals gather for the New Year. Has been the tradition for many many years. This year, as it had been for many years too, we met at Director’s house. It was supposed to be a gathering-cum-housewarming session. Director moved house again. Although still in the same district just a few blocks away, but it’s a bigger unit than her old one. And more nicely done up too ;p.

It was a pot luck thingy, and everyone brought something. I had wanted to bring salad, but then decided that chicken wing would be a better option. But then, on the day itself, I realized that Director also prepared chicken wings. Well, more is better than less right? But hor, Director didn’t say that we had to prepare her other guests’ (her family and relatives and other friends) share as well, so it was abit… Not enough lor… Hehehe…

Some of us, like me, went to Director’s house to cook, and got suan.. Aiyah… chicken wing must eat hot then nice mah… If cold cold, not nice right? And I also helped Director cook her chicken wing mah… *mumble mumble* Good thing HP helped me with the cooking, because I don’t know how to use a deep fryer

I brought Elfie with me. It was a mistake, because there were kids around, and I am afraid that Elfie is not very good with kids. He is terrified of them! I worried that he might get aggressive if he feels too irritated, so I carried him on my lap throughout. The kids kept asking me to let him roam freely… but I rather not…

And he did not pee for the 6 hours he was there, so I got abit worried. You see, I do not like him to hold his pee for too long. But no matter what I did, he just didn’t wanna pee, so I left a little early so I could let him out to pee. I hope I did not spoil any of the gal’s mood…

And yes, Elfie did an ultra-super-long pee when I dropped him on the grass the moment I stepped out from the cab. I think, it was a relief for him too…

16 Feb 2007 - Reunion Dinner

Happy me! We have half a day off today! Yippee! Good thing, because I can do some last minute shopping, and cleaning up of my room. I really have not got anything new to wear, so if I really can’t find anything nice, I will have to make do with at least a piece of polo shirt from Giordano lol.

Lucky for me, I managed to find some nice tops that I can fit into and look not that fat at Future State in Takashimaya (surprise surprise, because I have not been able to fit into ANY of their clothes And not look fat for MANY donkey years!). Trust me, I have not stepped into any of their shops for many many years, because I know that their clothes are designed for slim slim people ONLY. And their biggest size is M, so how can I, a sometimes-M-sometimes-L person fit into anything at all? Can you imagine how happy I was when I bought not 1, but 4 pieces of tops there? I went home a very happy girl *grin*

We are having our reunion dinner today, because bro’s girlfriend is joining us, and she can only make it today, because, well, her own family is doing their reunion on the actually day. We would be doing the usual steamboat thingy. Mum specially went to get a steamboat set just for tonight.

My last post in the year of the Dog.

Happy New Year to all, and may all HUAT ah in the year of the PIG!

Counting Down to CNY

Chinese New Year is just 3 days away.

I have not packed my room.

I have not bought any new clothes.

I have not done anything yet!

Every year, during Chinese New Year, me and the Beach Gals will meet up on the second day, 初二, at someone’s house, to eat, gamble and catch up. This has been our ‘tradition’ for the many years we have known one another.

This year, the gathering will be at Director’s new house. It’s a housewarming (though it has been warmed till hot already ;p) cum CNY gathering. Actually, we have been visiting her place for a few years consecutively. Reason being her house is big enough to house all of us, plus her family, siblings’ family, cousins and so on and so on. And also because her family likes to gamble (Ooops! Gambling den!). We will all gather at a big table, take out our money, and start betting. Black Jack, In-Between, Chor Dai Dee, and whatever game we can think of to gamble with.

Every year, we will pester Gangster to be the banker. Simply because the rest of us are chicken-hearted ;p. If it is not Gangster, it will be one of Director’s relatives. And every year, without fail, DaJie will lose all her Ang Pow money at the table. Somehow, she does not have much luck in gambling, so far. Me? Most of the time breakeven LOL.

Initially, we planned to go house visiting. Ut then we got lazy, so just stick to one house. Then we agreed to rotate every year. But somehow, we got stuck every year at Director’s house. I guess there is a gambler in all of us afterall LOL.

We wanted to go JB-ren’s house. But… erm… after we saw the Aides mosquito there, and knowing that she did not do anything about it, we are all skeptical about going to her house again hehehe.

Ok, next time, if I have a place of my own, I will invite you gals ok?

Naked Face?

Me super no mood to work today. But then, since when did I have any mood to work? Kekekeke…

Bubbles has gone for her manicure, and I am alone where I am sitting. Bored sia… *On some music*

One of the regulars blogs I follow mentioned that her boyfriend liked to see her with naked face, and that he told her that ‘natural is best’.

What you think?

My opinion? Bullshit lor.

I mean, try going for your first date with a naked face, or your most at-home-natural-look, see if he wants to date you again.

Men, or rather, human beings, are always attracted to beautiful things la. No matter how they always say ‘looks are not important’, or ‘it’s the inner beauty that will last forever’, look still do count.

See how many extra-marital affairs happened, because wives did not bother to upkeep their looks after marriage.

See if your neighbours who always see you in your geeky glasses, messy hair, face with nothing but pimple cream, wanna date you.

See if a guy whom you met on a bad hair day, or without your make up and fake lashes on, will ask you for your number.

To my that regular-blog-I-follow fellow blogger: Don’t be fooled by your boyfriend, ok. He only said that to make you happy. Take it with a pinch of salt, and continue to make yourself beautiful.

My boss got flowers

Bubbles got flowers

I also got Valentine's Day present.

Cookies from the company (which everyone gets) -_-'''

This cute apple with the 'Hock ah' on it kekeke

And I bought this ear ring holder. The irony is - my ears are not pierced.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Valentine’s Day.

What does this day mean to everyone?

For couples who are just falling in love, this day is the day to express how much you care for that person, to impress him/her (ok, mostly her la).

For couples who have been in love, this is just another day for you to have an excuse to celebrate (aka ask for gifts).

For couples who are married, this is a day to take a break from other chores (kids, household chores), and spend some time relaxing.

For couples who are on the verge of breaking up, this is a day you either make it or break it.

For singles, this is just any other day you feel suffocated by the need to get hitched soon.

Which category do you fall under?
The last time I got flowers for Valentine’s Day was… 2 years ago!!!! So loooooong…

Well, hopefully, next year this time, I won’t be single anymore ;p

***
Yesterday I got a phone call. From UOB. Asking me to sign up for Ladies Card muahahaha.

Know why I laugh so hard?

Remember the time when I was erm… more in debt, and they were chasing me for payment like they are loan sharks? I remember. I remember how they shouted at me over the phone, so rude and curt. How they used that you-owe-us-money tone to talk to me.

At that time, I was owing a few banks money, and no other banks gave me that kind of attitude. I told myself never, NEVER, to use UOB-anything for anything in my life anymore.

And now after a few years, they are taking the initiative to call me and ask me to sign up for their credit facilities?

I was contemplating whether I should take revenge on this poor fella who called me, and give him attitude, play hard to get, and shout at him in return. I decided not to. Afterall, he might not have been one of those (yes, more than one UOB customer service officer did that to me) who shouted at me before. I should not take it out on him, right?
‘Would you like to sign up our UOB Ladies Card?’

‘No.’

‘Why not?

‘Not interested’

‘Why not let me tell you the benefits of the card first? It offers…’

‘No need. I am not interested.’

‘Ok, then… Thank you and bye.’

Yes, I know some people must have ever wondered why I have a few credit cards, and none of them is the most popular UOB Ladies Card.

Now you know why.

Lesbian

I am back! For a while… You see, boss just told me boss won’t be coming in. So I relak relak abit now…

I have got some possible work-related good news again. Hope it materializes, then I think I will be happier, feel more fulfilled?

Maybe I should take this opportunity to finish my Taipei post ya? Yes I should. If not when boss comes in, I lagi no time to do it. (Sorry, I really not able to upload the photos. Somehow the error page keeps appearing)

You know, I think I have the tendency to change my sexual preference. Nowadays, or should I say always, I like to look at girls. Wherever I go, I will have this urge to look for pretty, sexy girls around me.

Like in Taipei, I kept gawking at LA. (Shit, I hope she doesn’t think I am weird!)

Like in Taipei, while waiting for the MTR, I saw this girl with really long, nice legs. I point her out to LA, and after that kept looking at her.

Like last Saturday, on my way to the MRT, I detoured to Burger King to get a drink, I saw this woman wearing off shoulder blouse in front of me. She was wearing normal bra, with straps, so it showed from the off shoulder blouse. I had this urge to pull the straps tight tight, then let it go ‘piak’!

Do you think I am weird?

Boss Back

I am posting a quick and short one, before I start work today. You see, my boss is back, and if you had been reading for a while, you will know that I am damn stressed when boss is back. Ok, I admit – I damn scared of boss one lor, can?

When boss is back, I don’t dare to make any appointments, in case I need to work late (which is usually the case anyway, if boss comes into office). And I hate to disappoint anyone by last minute telling that person 'I can't make it'.

When boss is back, I don’t usually lunch out, because I need to ‘stand by’, in case boss needs me around ‘suddenly’.

When boss is back, I come to work early early, because I need to clear things, before boss comes in, so I can give my full attention to boss.

When boss is back, I usually become a panda temporarily, because boss likes to work late (I am lucky, my record is only 1am), and I usually stay with boss in the office. So I come early, go home also ‘early’. So I sleep ‘early’, wake up early also.

When boss is back, I don’t blog that much, because I am busy lor. So if you don’t see any new post, please don’t think that something happened to me, or I MIA on purpose. I will be back one ok.

You may wonder why I am still staying put in this job, if I am like so damn stressed and unhappy. You see, money makes the world go round. My pay being not bad here, and bonus not too bad also (I hope), I will tahan for the time being, for the sake of money.

I like money.

Don’t you?

New Lens

Today I went back to the office. Why? Because I have been trying to upload my pictures for the past few days, and not doing any serious work lor. And then hor, it suddenly dawned on me that my boss is coming back tomorrow, and there are things I need to do lor. So, I die die also have to do it today, necause tomorrow, I am bringing Elfie for an outing to Godma I's place. And the worse thing is - they are doing maintainance for the computer room today, so the system will be down from 3pm onwards. So, I have to go early early if I want to finish my work.

After work, I planned to go and make new contact lenses and glasses at my usual optician in Orchard. So I went to Raffles Place station to take MRT. Then I recalled neighbourhood-doglover-friend D's shop is just above the station, so I went to say hi. D told me there is an optician just opposite his shop, where he makes his glasses, and they are not bad. So I went to see whether it will cost me cheaper. But then, having a Master's degree in shortsightedness, I know that anywhere will cost about the same = just as expensive.

Just as I expected, my new contact lens and glasses cost my a hefty sum of $740. I took out my wallet and card holder and tried to remember which credit I had not maxed out yet. In the end, I paid half by cash, half by credit. D stood there, looking at me and shaking his head at the same time...

Bonus, bonus, I need you! Please come soon!

Then I remembered - I can claim optical charges from my company! Maybe not the full sum, but even partial is better than nothing. So I can take back some of the $740. So happy!

Now I shall patienyl wait for my long overdue new lens...

Stay tuned for Taipei : Day 5 - 7!

Taipei : Days 1 - 4 (Updated)

I give up. I have been trying to post my pictures for 3 days, and all failed. I am ready to pull my head by my hair, drag it a distance, charge at the wall, and go BANG!

Let me just describe here la. Use a little bit of imagination, and try to visualize Taipei in your mind, ok? If I am lucky, and you are lucky, I can post at least some pictures today…

Day 1 (31 January)
YL and I had been very OE about the trip. We had been talking about it for the past 2 months, planning where to go, what to eat etc etc etc. LA was also looking forward to us being there, because she loves company, although she has had no lack of it throughout the 8 – 9 months she was there.

When the day finally arrived, YL and I, being the kiasu me and OE her, decided to meet at 10.30am at the airport. We wanted to be able to choose the seats we wanted. And we got it! Of course la, we were within the first 10 passengers to check in, I think.

Ok, I shall spare you guys the details of what we did at the airport kekeke (which was nothing much anyway ;p).

When we arrived at the Chiang Kai Shek Airport, it was about 5.40pm. And the sky was already starting to get dark. By the time we got our luggage, and stepped out of the airport, the sky was totally dark already.

As per LA’s instructions, we took a bus that will take us to the Grand Hyatt Hotel (The rumoured haunted hotel) in Taipei, and from there, she will meet us, and we will take a cab to her house.

It is quite expensive to take a taxi from the airport to Taipei. I think it will cost around S$50 – 60. Which was quite alright in my opinion. But for the experience, we took the bus. There are different buses, which will take you to different parts of Taipei. Freego (飞狗), Guo Guang (国光), and the one we took, Da You (大有), and a few more I can’t remember.

The ticketing counters for all the buses are located on the left hand side when you come out from the arrival hall. You can find the schedules of the buses there as well. YL and I lugged our luggage to the ticketing counter, and saw that our bus is leaving, like now NOW. We hurriedly bought our tickets and dragged our luggage to find the bus. I tried to confirm with the driver if it was the correct bus.

‘请问是去凯悦的吗?’

‘凯悦?是是是.’

So up the bus we went. Usually the bus drivers would announce whenever he stopped at certain drop off points. But this particular one was quite bad tempered, and he only announced when he felt like it, which I thought was not very convenient for tourists like us, who did not know the place well. YL and I had to keep our eyes and ears open wide to make sure that we did not miss our stop. When finally I thought of asking th driver at one of the stops, if we had missed it, he shouted and said ‘凯悦还没到啦!’.

Then, a few stops later, I finally saw the hotel. And I realized, it is not called 凯悦, but 君悦. Why the driver followed me to say its 凯悦, I don’t know.

Anyway, we alighted and happily waited for LA at the road of the hotel. Then from far far away, LA saw us, and waved. We were finally there! After talking so much about it, and planning for so long!

We quickly boarded a cab, and dropped our luggage at LA’s house, and went for our first dinner in Taipei.

LA took us to this place called Yong Kang Street 永康街, which is a little like our Holland Village. There are lots of restaurants there to choose from. We went to this place that serves Taiwanese food (Of course la! First meal in Taiwan must eat Taiwanese food!). Sorry, I did not take any photo of that, because we were too hungry, and when the food came, we just gobbled down everything.

When we finally cured our hunger, LA asked if we wanted dessert. Being a very dessert person, of course I said yes! The famous shaved ice! How can I miss that when I am right here in Taipei, right? Its damn nice I tell you! The strawberries are sweet, and the icve just melts in your mouth. Not like the ones in Singapore, so hard! There is condensed milk in it. Although I hate condensed milk stuff, but I simply love this! The combination is puuurrrrfect!

Then as we strolled down the street, we saw…… Mr Donut! I have heard so much about this, of course must try la. We went in to queue for our breakfast. LA also know we excited, and also our promise to Mich to take pictures of everything we eat, so she whipped out a camera and started taking pictures of the donuts, and of us buying.

When we stepped out of the store, this guy came to us, and started talking in English. He asked us if we were from Singapore, and claimed that he is Japanese, and will be traveling to Singapore next month, and hoped that he can have our contact so he can email us or something, when he is here. Please lor, first, he is not handsome like the guys in Japanese series, and second, he spilled out some Chinese when he was talking. I am sure he is some Taiwanese trying to be funny. All 3 of us claimed that we did not have email addresses or anything, and that we could not help him. And we walked away muahahahaha. LA then told us that she had noticed him acting weird in the donut shop. YL and I exchanged the Oh-I-see look. So it was LA that attracted him (Remember I was saying LA is a pretty gal?).

We went to the bus stop and took a bus back to LA’s apartment. The buses in Taipei works a different system from in Singapore. You go up the bus, and only pay when alighting. And wherever you go, it’s a standard fare. YL and I bought a farecard, like our EZLink, and we used it for our traveling for the one week in Taipei.

Oh, this is how LA’s apartment looks like (If you are lucky, you will see the images. If not, I will try to insert them in slowly).

The room YL and I slept in.

LA's bedroom

The living room. yeah, she still can't bear to take out the Xmas decor... Because 'it looks nice mah'

LA 'accidentally' saw the pics I took of her apartment, and she screamed 'Oh no! Now everyone knows I don't make my bed every morning!' kekeke.

This card, is from JNC to LA. See what she wrote in the card? That is why I specifically left the message that ‘we did not overeat’for JNC here kekeke.

Day 2 (1 Feb)
The view of Taipei 101 from LA’s apartment. Yes, she stays like 10 minutes walk away from the famous structure. We pass by the building practically everyday, because we would usually take a bus to the MTR, which is near to the building.

Our breakfast.

Our itinerary for the day is to go to the underground mall at Taipei Station, Xi Men Ding 西门町, and Wu Fen Pu 五分浦. These 3 are the most popular shopping places in Taipei, other than ShiLin night market 士林夜市.

In my opinion, Taipei underground mall is nothing to rave about. Maybe it’s the wrong season, so I find there is nothing much to buy. We were mainly looking for a jacket for YL, because the ones she brought were not warm enough for the weather. I tried a pink one on. Oh yes I loved it! But then, I was not prepared to pay over a hundred bucks for winter wear in Taipei.

Oh yes, I have to say this. If you have big feet, you can forget about buying shoes in Taipei. Their shoes sizes are friggy small lor! The biggest size they have in most shops are like size 5 or at most 5½. I was utterly disappointed…

After streaming through most of the shops, I looked at the directions and saw that we were near to this place that YL wanted to go for ear rings. So we side tracked from the mall and ventured out onto the streets. The shop that YL wanted to go we thought was on ChongQing Street Section 5 重庆路五段. We were at Section 1. So naturally we thought if we walked straight, we will reach Section 5. So we walked and we walked. Of course, we stopped by some shops we thought was interesting. Like this pet shop. Both YL and I are doglovers, so definitely, we would want to stop and check out their pet shops.

This pet shop got 3 levels lor: Pet supplies, clinic, spa, grooming, all in one place. Mr A., for your reference (Sorry I didn't take more pictures, because the sales assistant like looking at me with my camera lor) You can lots of motorbikes in Taipei city

We continued looking for section 5. On and on we walked. And about 20minutes later, we were at Section 2. We were happy that we were making progress. And on and on we walked. Another 25minutes later, we reached Section 3. And we carried on walking. Somehow we felt that Section 3 was very long. And we hoped to see Section 4 emerge anytime soon. Then we saw – the expressway! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It can’t be the end of ChongQing Street! Where is our Section 5????? I checked my watch and saw that we had walked for almost 1½ hours. We can’t give up after walking so much! Determined, we started to ask around where the place we were looking for was. And the answer we got was ‘重庆路没有五段的.’ -_-'''

We checked the card again. Indeed, it did not say Section 5. Why we kept thinking it was Section 5, I don’t know. But both of us were just so engrossed in looking for Section 5, we just kept thinking it was Section 5. Anyway, with some help, we finally got to the shop, and having wasted so much time and energy to find the place, YL and I were bent on buying something before leaving for Xi Men Ding. Not too bad, both of us bought ear rings, and some magnetic soft toys thingy.

By the time we reached Xi Men Ding, we were already hungry like mad. I bet if you put a cow on the table, we would have no problems finishing it down to its last bone.

We walked out from the MTR, and the first thing I saw was Tamago-Ya, a restaurant I have heard a lot about too. Its an egg theme restaurant – everything has an egg in it. The most popular dish was rice wrapped in egg. YL loved it!

Tomaga-Yo!

Xi Men Ding is a bustling shopping area, very popular with youngsters. They have all sorts of things there, from food to clothes to shoes to tattoo places to arcades to cinemas. It’s a little like our Far East Plaza. The things they sell there are more Jappy and Korean. Its not unusual to see human signboards, and walking advertisements here. I think Taiwanese are more daring, and ‘thick-skinned’ in that sense that they dare to do funny things that Singaporeans will not usually dare to do, like shouting loudly that they are lelonging (although now you do hear some doing that in Singapore, but it is still not a common sight). Maybe it’s the tough competition they have there, maybe its just their culture.

We went to meet LA at WuFenPu, a wholesale market, very popular amongst locals and tourists. The best time to go is around 4pm, because the shops will only open at about 1pm 0r 2pm. If you do happen to be in Taipei, you can’t give this a miss, because this place is the cheapest you can find all the clothes and shoes, XimneDing and Shilin both get their supply from here. And, please avoid Fridays, because that is when the shops will replenish their stocks, and the shops in WuFenPu will not give any attention to you small buyers.

The shops are small, compared to those in XiMenDing, and sometimes, the goods are just places in big bags on the floors and that is where you have to dig for the ‘good stuff’. The whole place is divided into sections like Korean, Japanese, local etc. The streets in between are very narrow, but the cars and motorbikes still come in. Some motorbikes will have trolleys attached to them and LA said that they are the ‘courier’ within WuFenPu.

Oh, And I have to announce – I found this shop where they carry shoes of my giant feet! I was so happy, that I went mad in this shop, and bought – only 3 pairs lah. 1 pair of boots, which I think I would probably wear it only in Taipei, and 2 pairs of working shoes. LA also bought boots there, and she changed into them immediately.

We spent a good 4 hours just in WuFenPu, and I think we still have not explored the entire plot of land. By The time we did take note of the time, it was already almost 12am. We headed for RaoHe Night Market饶河夜市 for our ‘dinner’.

There are many night markets in taipei, but the more popular ones are Shilin, RaoHe, MiaoKou庙口. The foodstuff are more or less the same in most markets, but some are famous for different things. Like in RaoHe, you can find the best Pepper Biscuit (Ok, this is direct translation la) 胡椒饼.

I think we were tired from walking, so we just went into this place that sells Mee Sua thingy, and sat down with our food (grilled sotong with spicy flavouring, pepper biscuit, and the mee sua thingy with vegetables, and juices from the stalls outside) and pig out. Then we headed back home at about 1+.

Our loot for the night

Day 3 (2 Feb)
This is an activity packed day. We were going to JiuFen九份! JiuFen is a small town on top of a hill. It’s a place that is a little commercialized by now, while still maintaining its laid back style. It gives you the feeling that you are back in the times of the 60s – 70s, as you walk along the streets. Everything is so serene, so calm, so relaxed.

We took the MTR to Taipei Main Station, and changed to the railway towards RuiFang瑞芳. The railway system is a little confusing, because there can be different trains going to different places at the same platform. You have to open your eyes and ears wide to pay attention to what is written and announced. We had to ask around to make sure that we got on the right train. Maybe we are too pampered back home, or maybe Singapore is too small to be confusing haha.

On the train to Ruifang. There is no one in our cabin. We did not know that there are seats assigned. Lucky it was a weekday and not much people! If not we sure malu...

At Ruifang, we had to change into another bus that will take us up to JiuFen. Again, there are different buses at the same place, so we had to check properly if we were on the right bus. Because we slept late the night before, and because we woke up late, we skipped breakfast, and by this time, we were hungry. YL and I could not resist a stall that was selling some sausage look-alike thingy. As we were enjoying our food, I suddenly saw a sign that said ‘请勿在车上饮食’, meaning ‘Please do not eat or drink on the bus’. No wonder nobody else was eating. We quickly finished our food and tried to hide evidences that we ever brought food up the bus.

One thing about Taiwanese – they will usually obey the ‘rules’. Like on the escalator of the MTR, people will automatically stand on the right side, to let people who wants to climb up or down use the left lane. And if there is a sign that said ‘Please recycle’, they will throw whatever rubbish they are holding into the respective bins. In Singapore, only those true environmental freaks will do so. Everyone else will just dump into whatever bin they see. They also queue up for the MTR, which is a rare sight in Singapore. If you do not queue in Taipei, you stick out like a sore thumb.

First thing we did when we alighted, was to look for food. The first stall that we came to was a beef noodle stall, which I have heard was good.

I have nothing more to say about JiuFen, except that both YL and I love the place. YL even said that if she ever had that 500 million, she will buy a building in JiuFen so she can came and stay in it whenever she likes!

(I hope I can post more pictures here because a picture speaks a thousand words, right)

On the way up

View from the top of JiuFen

Yes, thats a Seven-11 you see there. There are lots of it in Taipei. Not only Seven-11, there are other chains of convenient stores, so every few steps you take, you can see one.

There are lots of stairs in JiuFen. YL and I climbed like mad!

This funny shop assistant posed for me when he saw me trying to take a picture. He was quite helpful too and answered all our bo liao questions about the Muah Chee he was selling.

Funny window display we saw
Taiwanese always have nice names for their shops. Life is just like a movie/play? Not that I want to show you gross stuff, but I wanna tell you that in Taipei, they don't throwthe toilet paper into the toilet bowls, but in the bin next to it. So no matter whether you do big or small business, after you clean yourself, yiou throw the dirty paper in the bin, and not in the bowl.

At the bottom of the hill, is the KeeLung基隆 port. Miaokou night market can be found there, where there are lots of yummy and cheap seafood. But we did not go, as we were meeting LA for our long-awaited (by me la) MaLa Steamboat 麻辣火锅.

LA did not managed to make a reservation, as they were fully booked till 11pm! Gosh, what hours do Taiwanese eat? We left our names there and were told to go back at 9.30pm.

We went to shop around the area. There is a mini night market selling mainly foodstuff called ShiDa 师大, mainly for the students that are studying in the University nearby. La recommended us this drink call Frog-Knock-Milk (Also direct translation la) 青蛙撞奶. Nice… *Trying to relive the yummy taste*

When we were tired of walking we went back to the restaurant to wait outside. We saw this cute Retriever also waiting outside. Taiwanese are very dog friendly. Everywhere we go, we will surely see dogs on leash with their proud owners walking behind them. Most restaurants allow dogs in their alfresco seats. How I wish Singapore is like that… Well, I guess that’s the thing living in a multi-racial country – you have to respect the religion and habits of the other races.

When we finally went into the restaurant, we were again, damn hungry already. So whilst I went to the washroom, LA and YL ordered. It’s a buffet, so we can order anything we want, unlimited. They even serve unlimited Hagan Daaz ice cream and best of all – Coke! Its totally heaven for ice cream and Coke lovers like me!

Our steamboat. One side is Mala麻辣, the other is Suan Cai酸菜

I must say Taipei is very generous in their food servings. Everything comes in a very big portion!

After that (I told you it was an activity packed day!), we adjourned to KTV, another of my favorite activity! I have heard so much about KTVs in Taipei, and LA said we should go, so we did! We went to the one in Xi Men Ding. We reached there at about close to 12.30am.

When we went into our room, LA wanted to use the toilet. After like 3 seconds, she came out and told me'If you wanna take a picture of the toilet, better do it before I use it.' I went to take a look. The toilet bowl was sealed closed with a piece of paper to show that it has been cleaned and unused before we came. I am impressed!

The walkway outside our room I must mention their sound system. Damn good man! And hor, those who go ktv will know there is something called analog, then the original singer will sing right? This KTV hor, if you analog the song, but you come to the part you know how to sing, and you pick up the mic to sing, the analog will automatically go off one leh! And when you come to a part you don't know, it will come on again. Good right?

Impressive, isn’t it? A whole 7-storey high building, all KTV rooms! Its so grand, it looks like a hotel! Me and YL went ‘WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH’ all the way from the entrance to the room.

The service is quite good. And the thing I like is, the door is totally wooden, not like the ones in Singapore, part of it is glass so everyone walking pass can look inside. And the waiters/waitresses will not come in as and when they like to disturb you. They only came in to take orders, and when the bill is called for. No one will disturb you and you can do anything you want inside. Shiok! The best thing is, there is a toilet attached in every room, so you don’t have to walk out of the room at all!

We booked the room for 2 hours, but decided to extend for another hour, simply because it was too shiok (Or was it because I look too shiok to leave? Kekeke). Byt the time we left, it was close to 4am. And when we got back to the apartment, as we did all other nights, we watched TV and chatted awhile, before we finally decided to sleep at 6am…

Day 4 (3 Feb)
Its hotspring day! Because we slept late, we woke up relatively late too. By the time we set off, it was close to lunch time, so we had lunch at this little outlet near LA’s apartment.

LA said we could take the MTR to Beitou北投, where the hotspring is, but there is also a bus that will bring us directly to the place. But because she has not tried taking the bus, she did not know how long the journey would be. I told her we could try the bus, since we were not rushing for time. BIG mistake. The bus journey took us almost an hour, or was it more??? The MTR would have gotten us there in… 45minutes?

We alighted near to the Beitou MTR station, and took a slow walk to the hot spring we wanted to go. Beitou is the area where hotsprings are closest to Taipei city. Here you can see hotspring, hotspring, and hotspring. Along the streets, there are some artistics carvings. The wall on my side was very pretty too, but I did not take any picture of that (How come huh?). We passed by the new library, which is a nice structure on its own.

The one that we went to is called Spring Resort春天. It has 7 public pools, and you can stay there for the whole day for NT$800. They even sell eggs for you to cook above the hotspring. I had hear horror stories about how hot the water can be, but it is only through my own experience that I can truly tell you – some of the pool is really damn HOT! We made a mistake by trying to go into the pool with the least people, or should I say, no people at all. We soon found out why. It was so hot lor! I could only splash the water on my feet, that’s it! Which human can sit inside for 30 seconds????

One of the reaons I came to taipei was hot spring, and I was looking forward to it. And I forgot the most iportant thing - my swiminsuit! So i had to buy one on the spot. The female changing roomLA, getting ready for hot spring. This is the standard outfit here. Swimming cap is a must, for hygiene purposes. But I can assure you, I look damn ugly with the cap on me...
The super duper hot pool!
Me taking myself after shower

We found one that we could submerge our whole body in – 40degrees. Comfortable. Minutes later, we saw some men walking to the no-human-can-sit-inside-for-30seconds pool, and they too, were not able to go in at all. And one of them exclaimed ‘118度!不是人能进去的!’ Kekeke, how right he is!

After a nice hot bath post the hot spring, we headed for ShiLin night market士林夜市. It was just a few stops away from Beitou. Here we pigged out again. We left for home early this night, because we were all worn out. But then, ironically, we did not sleep early, but chatted the night away, yet again.
